Microsoft Internet Explorer vgx.dll imagedata Remote Code Execution Vulnerability

June 14th, 2011

Vulnerability Details

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Internet Explorer. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.

The specific flaw exists within vgx.dll while parsing VML objects from the DOM. Specifically, the faulty code exists while handling imagedata parameters during page deconstruction. By dynamically assigning an attribute to an imagedata object the process can be made to access freed memory. Successful exploitation can lead to code execution under the context of the application.
